Scaling startups moving off shared IPs to dedicated IPs across various providers (SendGrid, Mailgun) and getting massive bounce rates because they didn’t manually throttle their warmup schedule.
Has anyone else run into this, and what is the standard engineering fix?
This is a classic trap when upgrading email infrastructure on any major platform (SendGrid, Mailgun, AWS SES). When you move to a fresh Dedicated IP, inbox providers (Gmail, Yahoo) view it as “cold”. If you blast 50k emails on Day 1, you will get immediately blacklisted.
The standard warmup schedule:
- Day 1: 50 emails
- Day 2: 100 emails
- Ramp up by 20% daily for 30 days.
Manually throttling this in your app backend is a huge engineering headache.
To solve this, look for providers that handle infrastructure-layer throttling. For instance, AutoSend built a Gradual Send feature that automatically throttles and ramps your outbound volume daily at the infrastructure layer, saving you from building custom rate-limiters.
