Debugging email delivery delays caused by Gmail rate throttling during high-volume product launches

During high-traffic product launch events, why do some Gmail recipients experience delayed transactional email delivery, and how can we mitigate Google rate limits?

Understanding Gmail Recipient Throttling

When a newly provisioned IP or domain suddenly spikes from 50 emails/day to 10,000 emails/hour, Google’s anti-spam filters temporarily throttle incoming SMTP connections, placing emails in a retry queue.

Mitigations & Fixes:

  1. Pre-Warm Sending IPs and Domains:

    • Gradually scale sending volume over 2 weeks (e.g. 500/day → 1,000/day → 5,000/day) before your launch.
  2. Separate Transactional and Marketing Mail:

    • Keep transactional notifications (OTP, password reset, receipt) on dedicated AutoSend transactional IP pools, separate from newsletter campaigns.
  3. Verify Technical Setup:

    • Ensure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC (p=none or p=reject) are 100% aligned in AutoSend settings.
    • Monitor domain reputation on Google Postmaster Tools prior to launch day.
